Lisbon menina e moça

Last weekend I finally went to Lisbon.

Finalmente fui a Lisboa no fim-de-semana passado.

My daughter-in-law had an invitation

to visit the "Festival do Peixe" at Palácio da Galé

(and now I know the Palácio da Galé is the old post office station from where so many years ago I’ve mailed so many letters to my husband in the US...).

A minha nora tinha um convite para visitar o “Festival do Peixe“ no Palácio da Galé

(e agora fiquei a saber que o Palácio da Galé está situado onde antigamente estava a estação dos correios donde hà anos atrás eu enviava as cartas para o meu marido nos Estados Unidos...).

Rochelle (my daughter-in-law) will show the event's pics and talk about it on her blog, Acquired Life.

A Rochelle (a minha nora) vai publicar as fotos e falar um pouco acerca do que lá aconteceu no blog dela, Acquired Life.

For me it was a perfect excuse

to tag along and wonder myself with the place of thousand memories.

Para mim foi a perfeita desculpa para ir com ela e aproveitar para me maravilhar

com um local que me traz de volta milhares de memórias.

Lisbon is a beautiful city,

and I seem to be unable to get rid of

the words of Carlos do Carmo out of my head

(a very famous Portuguese fadista, singer of fado, traditional Portuguese music) Lisboa menina e moça... no translation, sorry, it just doesn't seem quite right when translated.

Lisboa é uma cidade muito bonita, e não consigo tirar da cabeça as palavras do Carlos do Carmo, Lisboa menina e moça... não traduzo porque não parece a mesma coisa quando é traduzido.

But I will say it compares Lisbon to a young beautiful lady.

Mas sempre digo que compara Lisboa a uma rapariga bonita.

Lisbon is a very old city, tough almost all the old part of city

had to be rebuilt a few centuries back after an horrible earthquake destroyed all the downtown part of the city (1755).

Lisboa é uma cidade muito antiga, embora a maior parte da cidade velha

tivesse de ser reconstruída hà alguns séculos atràs,

após um terrível terramoto ter destruído toda a parte baixa da cidade (em 1755).

Anyway,

even if we drove through, I only had the chance

to see and take some pictures of the world famous square Praça do Comércio, which touches the river Tagus.

I can't even describe the feeling...

De qualquer modo,

apesar de termos atravessado a cidade de carro, só tive oportunidade

para ver e tirar algumas fotografias da mundialmente famosa

Praça do Comércio, que toca o rio Tejo.

Nem consigo descrever a sensação...

Sweet nostalgic memories started invading me just as I would breathe... the smell of my river and of my city filled my lungs as my eyes wondered around.

Doces e nostálgicas memórias começaram a invadir-me à medida que respirava... o cheiro do meu rio e da minha cidade encheram-me os pulmões à medida que os meus olhos se maravilhavam.

I hope my poorly photographer skills are able to give you a glimpse of the beauty of this wonderful city of mine.

Espero que os meus pobres dotes como fotógrafa vos possam dar uma pequena ideia da beleza desta minha maravilhosa cidade.

Gosh!, it does feel good to be back!

Country Mouse

After twelve long years, I'm finally back in my home country.

Depois de doze longos anos,

 estou de volta ao meus país natal.

A little over two weeks ago I took off from Knoxville and landed in Lisbon.

Hà pouco mais de duas semanas levantei vôo de Knoxville e aterrei em Lisboa.

From the airport I came straight to my parents home,

a little village in a rural area.

Do aeroporto vim directamente para a casa dos meus pais, numa cidadezinha rural.

These two weeks have been filled with amazing feelings and emotions,

flashes of the past and wondering of the future.

Estas duas semanas têm sido preenchidas com sentimentos e emoções fantásticas, com flashes do passado e inquietações com o futuro.

Long busy days,

and for the first time in many many years

my days have been shared with actual people

and with the little things I was so used to and that are so natural

in everyday life here.

Têm sido dias longos e compridos, e pela primeira vez em muitos anos

os meus dias têm sido preenchidos com pessoas reais e com as pequenas coisas

a que eu costumava estar habituada e que são tão naturais na vida de todos os dias por aqui.

Slowly but surely things are getting organized

and I feel more and more at home.

Tough life in the country is slightly different from living in the city,

the difference is welcome.

Lenta mas seguramente as coisas estão a organizar-se e sinto-me cada vez mais em casa.

Embora a vida no campo seja ligeiramente diferente da vida na cidade, a diferença é agradável..

Days are long and full, and since I'm living with my son and his family in my parents home we always have something to keep us busy with.

Os dias são compridos e cheios, e uma vez que estou a viver com o meu filho e a família dele

na casa dos meus pais temos sempre coisas para nos manter ocupados.

It has been really really good to be able to share my days with the little one, my grandson, for whom I've longed for so long.

Tem sabido muito bem poder compartilhar os meus dias com o pequenino, o meu neto, de quem eu tinha tantas saudades.

My son is awesome with his hands and is always busy trying to figure out what else can he do outside.

O meu filho é muito habilidoso e está constantemente a pensar em coisas para fazer ou construir lá fora.

The pics bellow illustrate a bit how he has been keeping busy and some of the things he has already accomplished.

As fotos embaixo ilustram um pouco como é que ele se tem ocupado e

 algumas das coisas que ele já fez.

And for now I'll leave you all, with the promise of posting

on a more regular basis.

Farewell for now

Since this blog last post,

time has been gone by

and I'm nearly on level zero for the countdown...

Desde o último posting neste blog,

o tempo tem passado e estou quase no nível zero da contagem decrescente...

In less than a week

I'll be leaving what it has been my home for the last twelve years,

along with Pooh-Pooh the cat.

Em menos de uma semana

deixarei o que tem sido o meu lar durante os últimos doze anos,

conjuntamente com a gata Pooh-Pooh.

My house is finally empty from the boxes packed

with loving memories and pieces of life.

The boxes are on their way and so will we next week.

A minha casa está finalmente esvaziada das caixas

cheias com doces memórias e pedaços de vida.

As caixas vão a caminho e nos também estaremos a caminho na próxima semana.

It has been quite a journey.

What had started from being a very shining lovely yellow brick road

has became the road to hell.
Tem sido uma árdua jornada.
O que começou por ser uma brilhante estrada de tijolos amarelos
tornou-se numa estrada para o inferno.

Don't get me wrong: 

I would gladly walk that road again and again 

to bring my husband back from wherever limbo world 

he was wondering in for the last seven years.
Nao me interpretem mal:
eu voltaria a percorrer esse caminho alegremente e vezes sem conta
para poder trazer o meu marido de volta
do terrível limbo onde ele algures deambulava durante os últimos sete anos.

I lost that battle and I was left alone with my (literally) broken heart.
Perdi essa batalha e fiquei sózinha com (literalmente) o meu coração despedaçado.

Friends and family grabbed me by the hands

(even if from so far far away)

but mostly was the love for my son and grandson 

that kept me surfacing above those troubled waters.
Os amigos e a família agarraram-me pelas mãos
(ainda que de tão longe)
mas foi sobretudo o amor pelo meu filho e pelo meu neto
que me mantiveram à superfície daquelas tumultuosas águas.

Now I'm ready for whatever will be the rest of my life,

a continent and a ocean apart,

lots of incertitude, bunches of pains and aches, 

but also sweet memories that will always live in me.
Agora estou pronta para aquilo que seja o resto da minha vida,
a um continente e um oceano de distância,
com montes de incertezas, muitas dores e penas,
mas também com memórias lindas que viverão para sempre em mim.

I will not talk about what I'm leaving behind

but what I'm taking with me:
Não vou falar do que deixo para tràs mas do que vou levar comigo:

the loving memories,

the beauty of my marriage,

the love of my husband,
my American family,
my niece Elizabeth, 
Lindsey & Aleya, almost grownups now,

and the darling children that I'll always love, Kaytlin & Mckenzie,
as doces memórias,
a beleza do meu casamento,
o amor do meu marido,
a minha família americana.,
a minha sobrinha Elizebeth, 
Lindsey & Aleya, já quase adultas,
e as queridas crianças que vou amar para sempre, Kaytlin & Mckenzie,

and whom I'm hopping will always think of me

as their "mamaw Lena". 
e que espero pensem sempre em mim como a "avó Lena".

I'll see you all back from old dear Europe.

Lined Tunisian crochet backpack

Time lately has just not been enough,

so I haven't been able to do much craft wise,

but I wanted to show you my very last project I worked on.

Ultimamente o tempo não tem chegado para tudo, por isso não tenho feito nada novo ao nível do artesanato, mas queria mostrar-vos o último projecto que acabei.

A few months ago I made this Tunisian crochet backpack,

and then it became a UFO,

laying on the UFO container awaiting to be lined.

Há alguns meses atrás fiz esta mochila em crochet Tunisino, mas depois acabou por se tornar num UFO (unfinished object), esquecido na caixa dos UFO à espera de um forro.

So, and since this is the time

for decisions and resolution to be made and accomplished,

the backpack got to get a nice lining.

Por isso e uma vez que esta é uma altura para tomar decisões e cumprir com resoluções, a mochila acabou por ganhar um bonito forro.

Here it is, all done, ready to be filled with all the junk

I usually fill my bags with...

... it looks nice enough on my back, doesn't it...?

Aqui está, pronta e à espera que eu a encha com toda a tralha que habitualmente ponho nos meus sacos... mas ficou bonita e parece bem às minhas costas, não parece?

will be from many many miles away...

I'll be moving back to Europe early April,

me and my cat Pooh-Pooh

(my little friend will always be where I am,

but let me tell you... it sure ain't easy to fly with a pet!).

Vou regressar à Europa no princípio de Abril,

eu e a minha gata Pooh-Pooh

(a minha amiga estará sempre onde eu estiver

mas deixem-me dizer-vos... nao é nada fácil viajar com um animal de estimação!).

Lots of requirements and whatnot's to deal with!

Anyway, everything is about ready by now for the big move,

I only have a few loose ends to tie off and a lot to pack,

but I'm getting there...

Há montes de requerimentos e papeladas e procedimentos para tratar!

No entanto, agora já está quase tudo pronto para a mudança,

só tenho algumas pontas soltas para atar e muito para empacotar, mas está quase...

Nevertheless, between computer trouble

(yes, my brand new laptop started acting like it's going to die at at moment,

just when I depend on it for everything!),

horrible bad weather scares

Ainda assim, e entre problemas com o computador

( sim, o meu laptop novinho em folha começou a ir-se abaixo constantemente,

mesmo na altura que eu mais preciso e dependo do computador para tratar de tudo!),

sustos terríveis devidos ao mau tempo

(yeah, here we also got hit by the tornadoes... fortunately,

and unlike others, we were safe when all was done and gone),

and life changing decision being made... my life is upside down right now.

(sim, aqui também fomos atingidos pelos tornados... felizmente, e ao contrário de outras pessoas noutras localidades, estávamos bem quando tudo terminou),

e entre decisões de mudança de vida a terem de ser tomadas... a minha vida

está de pernas para o ar neste momento.

Still, I do apologize to all of my friends and followers

for the long absence from this blog.

Cats and UFO's

On my last blog post I had told you I had been working on some projects,

and showed you a pic of Pooh-Pooh, my cat.

And I promised to come back to it, remember?
No último post no meu blog disse-vos que tenho estado a trabalhar nalguns projectos, e mostrei-vos uma foto da minha gata, a Pooh-Pooh.
E prometi voltar ao assunto, lembram-se?

Well, this is it.

Today I'll be talking about UFO's,

and it's connection to Pooh-Pooh.
Então, pois aqui está.
Hoje irei falar de UFO's, e a ligação destes com a Pooh-Pooh.

If you're a crafter and are owned by a cat... you know exactly what I'm talking about, don't you?

If you haven't guess it yet... sewing, crafting, knitting... and cats... always came together!
Se faz artesanato e se um gato é o seu dono... sabe exactamente do que estou a falar, não sabe?
E se ainda não adivinhou... costurar, fazer artesanato, tricotar... e gatos... vêm sempre em conjunto!

Your cat will always be there, supervising you,

giving you a hand (read:paw), pulling a little string here, another little string there, and if you don't behave or try something she won't approve... you'll get a deserved slap in the hand!
O seu gato está presente o tempo todo, como um supervisor, dando-lhe uma mãozinha (leia-se: garra), puxando um fiozito aqui e ali, e se você não se portar bem ou se tentar alguma coisa que o gato não aprove... receberá uma merecida sapatada na mão!

How all this goes with UFO's...?

That's easy!
O que é que tudo isto tem a ver com UFO's...?
Essa é fácil!

 Last week I've decided to finish some UFO's (unfinished objects)

and, of course, Miss Pooh-Pooh was right there,
Na semana passada decidi acabar alguns UFO's (objectos inacabados) e, claro, a menina Pooh-Pooh- estava lá,
to help and check things out!

Eventually, her eyes started to get heavy,
para ajudar e fiscalizar!
Finalmente, os olhos começaram a ficar pesados,

 

and I rushed to finish my UFO... which was a huge quilted ornament ball (the same technique as in these quilted CD Christmas ornaments, remember?).
e apressei-me a acabar o meu UFO... que era uma bola enorme para fazer um ornamento de Natal (forrada com tecido dobrado que dá a ilusão de ser um quilt, a mesma técnica que usei para estes ornamentos de Natal feitos a partir de CDs, lembram-se?).

Because this specific ball was huge,

Porque esta especifica bola era enorme,

it became an UFO... and was laying on my work area, forgotten,

for more than an year... it took me about some good 4/5 hours to finish it.

acabou por se tornar um UFO... e ficou em cima da minha área de trabalho, esquecida, por mais de um ano... e levou-me umas boas 4/5 horas para a acabar.

But it was well worth it, don't you think?

Mas valeu bem a pena, não acham?

It hangs from my doorway now,
Agora está pendurada no umbral da porta,

and it sure does look nice!
e fica mesmo bem!
Of course, Pooh-Pooh has been practicing her jumping skills to get to it... luckily for me, she still needs to keep practicing a lit bit more!
Claro que a Pooh-Pooh tem estado a praticar as suas capacidades de salto para a alcançar... felizmente para mim, ela ainda tem de praticar bastante!
