Olivais Sul, travelling back in time

Last Friday my sister came by

and invited me to go with her and her husband

for a weekend in Lisbon.
Na passada sexta-feira a minha irmã convidou-me
para ir com ela e o marido
passar um fim-de-semana a Lisboa.

We had a great time and together

(re)visited some of our childhood memories and places.
Passámos uns bons momentos
e juntos (re)visitámos algumas memórias e lugares da nossa infância.

We grew up at a wonderful Lisbon´s neighborhood,

Olivais Sul.
Crescemos num belo bairro de Lisboa, os Olivais Sul.

She is four years younger than me

and has lived for five or six more years with my parents after I left home, therefore she remembers much more than I do

(and no, it has nothing to do with my age...).
Ela é quatro anos mais nova do que eu
e viveu por mais cinco ou seis anos com os meus pais depois de eu ter saído de casa,
e por isso lembra-se de mais coisas que eu
(e não, não tem nada a ver com a minha idade...).

I've specially enjoyed the fact

that many of the old places and buildings are still there

but also it was wonderful to see how everything is different,

tough still looking the same.
Gostei especialmente do facto de muitos dos lugares e prédios de antes ainda lá estarem, 
mas ao mesmo tempo foi incrível ver como tudo está tão diferente e no entanto tão igual.

We went to the Olivais shopping center,

to the Largo do Ferrador
Fomos ao Olivais Shopping,
ao Largo do Ferrador

(so called because of the stores Ferrador, which I also visited),
visited all the cafés we used to go to (Sorraia, Tó, (O)A Tosta...) and went by the beautiful Vale do Silêncio (Valley of Silence).
(assim chamado por causa das lojas Ferrador, que também visitei),
fomos a todos os cafés a que costumávamos ir (Sorraia, Tó, (O) A Tosta...)
e passámos junto ao bonito Vale do Silêncio.

On Saturday we took the subway

and visited Lisbon´s Book Fair

(when I was in college I used to work at a publishing house

and I've also worked at the book fair).
No sábado apanhámos o Metro e fomos à Feira do Livro de Lisboa
(quando eu andava na Faculdade trabalhei numa editora e também trabalhei na Feira do Livro).

Still on Friday night we also had a late very traditional Portuguese meal

at a famous little restaurant down town,

very cute and well known by tourists

(more foreigners than Portuguese people in there...).
Ainda na sexta feira à noite jantámos num restaurantezinho famoso na baixa,
muito conhecido pelos turistas
(havia mais estrangeiros que portugueses...),
e comemos um típica refeição lisboeta
(pataniscas de bacalhau com arroz de tomate).
We also went to Braço de Prata,

late Friday night,

to an old ammunition's military plant now converted

as a space for multi cultural activities... got to watch and listen

to a Portuguese group named Mu,
which I really enjoyed,
very nice band and very nice music.
Também fomos a Braço de Prata mais à noite,
ao espaço multi-cultural que funciona na velha fábrica de munições...
...e assistimos a um espectáculo dos MU,
de que gostei imenso, é uma banda muito gira com muito boa música.

It was indeed a very nice weekend.

Medieval Fair - part II

It was a gorgeous day, weather related,

for the last day of the Medieval Fair "The Princess Dowry".

Estava um dia muito bonito,

no último dia da Feira Medieval "O Dote da Princesa".

We did go back last Sunday

and I was able to take a lot more pics. 

Voltámos lá no passado domingo,

e tive opurtunidade de tirar bastantes mais fotografias.

There was a lot of stuff going on...

the hanging, the witch trial, the parade, the arrival of the Princess...

and so much more that I'm sure we've missed.

I hope the pics below will be able to show you a little bit

of what was my first Medieval fair experience in Portugal.

Havia montes de coisas a acontecer...

o enforcamento, o julgamento da bruxa, o cortejo, a chegada da Princesa...

e muito mais que com certeza não vi.

Espero que as fotos abaixo vos consigam mostrar um pouco daquilo que foi a minha primeira Feira Medieval em Portugal.

Medieval Fair

Between getting settle, be with family and walking down memory lane,

days have been going fast.
Entre assentar arraiais, estar com a família e reviver memórias antigas,
os dias têm passado depressa.

But still got a little time to visit the Medieval Fair happening now, 

at the castle of a very close by little village, Torres Novas.
Mas ainda tive tempo para visitar a Feira Medieval que está a decorrer nesta altura num castelo de uma cidadezinha aqui perto, Torres Novas.

It is a very interesting tough kinda new tradition,

that I didn't knew from before.
É uma tradição muito interessante, se bem que nova, e que eu não conhecia.

It's a funny, entertaining way to show aspects of Portuguese History

and the ancient ways of how everyday life tasks were performed,

both as by nobility and royalty as by peasants, crafters, merchants, entertainers and the less fortunate.
É uma forma lúdica e engraçada de mostrar aspectos da História Portuguesa e os modos como antigamente se processavam as tarefas da vida de todos os dias, tanto pela nobreza e realeza, como pelos camponeses, artesãos, mercadores, actores e os menos afortunados.

It is also a considerable touristic attraction,

bringing a well needed boost to local economy.
É uma grande atracção turística e proporciona um aumento da economia local.

This year's theme is "The Princess Dowry",

based on real local events at the time of the Portuguese King D. João III,
(around the fifteen hundreds).
O tema deste ano é "O Dote da Princesa",
baseado em acontecimentos reais e locais na altura do Rei D. João III
(por volta de mil qinhentos e tal).

I've loved it, and loved the concept of "showing" history this way.
Adorei, e adorei também o conceito de se "mostrar história" desta maneira.

Maybe I'll go back today, for the closing shows of the fair.
Talvez lá volte hoje, para os festejos de encerramento da feira.
For the first time in many years, I had a night out with my family,
and that, that, was very special!
Pela primeira vez em muitos anos, saí à noite com a minha família, 
o que foi muito, muito, especial!

Lisbon menina e moça

Last weekend I finally went to Lisbon.

Finalmente fui a Lisboa no fim-de-semana passado.

My daughter-in-law had an invitation

to visit the "Festival do Peixe" at Palácio da Galé

(and now I know the Palácio da Galé is the old post office station from where so many years ago I’ve mailed so many letters to my husband in the US...).

A minha nora tinha um convite para visitar o “Festival do Peixe“ no Palácio da Galé

(e agora fiquei a saber que o Palácio da Galé está situado onde antigamente estava a estação dos correios donde hà anos atrás eu enviava as cartas para o meu marido nos Estados Unidos...).

Rochelle (my daughter-in-law) will show the event's pics and talk about it on her blog, Acquired Life.

A Rochelle (a minha nora) vai publicar as fotos e falar um pouco acerca do que lá aconteceu no blog dela, Acquired Life.

For me it was a perfect excuse

to tag along and wonder myself with the place of thousand memories.

Para mim foi a perfeita desculpa para ir com ela e aproveitar para me maravilhar

com um local que me traz de volta milhares de memórias.

Lisbon is a beautiful city,

and I seem to be unable to get rid of

the words of Carlos do Carmo out of my head

(a very famous Portuguese fadista, singer of fado, traditional Portuguese music) Lisboa menina e moça... no translation, sorry, it just doesn't seem quite right when translated.

Lisboa é uma cidade muito bonita, e não consigo tirar da cabeça as palavras do Carlos do Carmo, Lisboa menina e moça... não traduzo porque não parece a mesma coisa quando é traduzido.

But I will say it compares Lisbon to a young beautiful lady.

Mas sempre digo que compara Lisboa a uma rapariga bonita.

Lisbon is a very old city, tough almost all the old part of city

had to be rebuilt a few centuries back after an horrible earthquake destroyed all the downtown part of the city (1755).

Lisboa é uma cidade muito antiga, embora a maior parte da cidade velha

tivesse de ser reconstruída hà alguns séculos atràs,

após um terrível terramoto ter destruído toda a parte baixa da cidade (em 1755).

Anyway,

even if we drove through, I only had the chance

to see and take some pictures of the world famous square Praça do Comércio, which touches the river Tagus.

I can't even describe the feeling...

De qualquer modo,

apesar de termos atravessado a cidade de carro, só tive oportunidade

para ver e tirar algumas fotografias da mundialmente famosa

Praça do Comércio, que toca o rio Tejo.

Nem consigo descrever a sensação...

Sweet nostalgic memories started invading me just as I would breathe... the smell of my river and of my city filled my lungs as my eyes wondered around.

Doces e nostálgicas memórias começaram a invadir-me à medida que respirava... o cheiro do meu rio e da minha cidade encheram-me os pulmões à medida que os meus olhos se maravilhavam.

I hope my poorly photographer skills are able to give you a glimpse of the beauty of this wonderful city of mine.

Espero que os meus pobres dotes como fotógrafa vos possam dar uma pequena ideia da beleza desta minha maravilhosa cidade.

Gosh!, it does feel good to be back!
