Cats and UFO's

On my last blog post I had told you I had been working on some projects,

and showed you a pic of Pooh-Pooh, my cat.

And I promised to come back to it, remember?

E prometi voltar ao assunto, lembram-se?

Well, this is it.

Today I'll be talking about UFO's,

and it's connection to Pooh-Pooh.
Então, pois aqui está.
Hoje irei falar de UFO's, e a ligação destes com a Pooh-Pooh.

If you're a crafter and are owned by a cat... you know exactly what I'm talking about, don't you?

If you haven't guess it yet... sewing, crafting, knitting... and cats... always came together!
Se faz artesanato e se um gato é o seu dono... sabe exactamente do que estou a falar, não sabe?
E se ainda não adivinhou... costurar, fazer artesanato, tricotar... e gatos... vêm sempre em conjunto!

Your cat will always be there, supervising you,

giving you a hand (read:paw), pulling a little string here, another little string there, and if you don't behave or try something she won't approve... you'll get a deserved slap in the hand!
O seu gato está presente o tempo todo, como um supervisor, dando-lhe uma mãozinha (leia-se: garra), puxando um fiozito aqui e ali, e se você não se portar bem ou se tentar alguma coisa que o gato não aprove... receberá uma merecida sapatada na mão!

How all this goes with UFO's...?

That's easy!
O que é que tudo isto tem a ver com UFO's...?
Essa é fácil!

 Last week I've decided to finish some UFO's (unfinished objects)

and, of course, Miss Pooh-Pooh was right there,
Na semana passada decidi acabar alguns UFO's (objectos inacabados) e, claro, a menina Pooh-Pooh- estava lá,
to help and check things out!

Eventually, her eyes started to get heavy,
para ajudar e fiscalizar!
Finalmente, os olhos começaram a ficar pesados,

 

and I rushed to finish my UFO... which was a huge quilted ornament ball (the same technique as in these quilted CD Christmas ornaments, remember?).
e apressei-me a acabar o meu UFO... que era uma bola enorme para fazer um ornamento de Natal (forrada com tecido dobrado que dá a ilusão de ser um quilt, a mesma técnica que usei para estes ornamentos de Natal feitos a partir de CDs, lembram-se?).

Because this specific ball was huge,

Porque esta especifica bola era enorme,

it became an UFO... and was laying on my work area, forgotten,

for more than an year... it took me about some good 4/5 hours to finish it.

acabou por se tornar um UFO... e ficou em cima da minha área de trabalho, esquecida, por mais de um ano... e levou-me umas boas 4/5 horas para a acabar.

But it was well worth it, don't you think?

Mas valeu bem a pena, não acham?

It hangs from my doorway now,
Agora está pendurada no umbral da porta,

and it sure does look nice!
e fica mesmo bem!
Of course, Pooh-Pooh has been practicing her jumping skills to get to it... luckily for me, she still needs to keep practicing a lit bit more!
Claro que a Pooh-Pooh tem estado a praticar as suas capacidades de salto para a alcançar... felizmente para mim, ela ainda tem de praticar bastante!

How to make fresh cheese

It has been almost a month since my last blog post.

New year, new resolutions, new beginnings... and at the same time 

that I'm try to find good solutions for lots of concerns in my life right now,

some things get to be left apparently unattended.

Já se passou quase um mês desde a última vez que escrevi no blog.

Ano Novo, resoluções novas, novos começos... e ao mesmo tempo que tento achar soluções para alguns dos problemas na minha vida neste momento, algumas coisas ficam aparentemente descuidadas.

Only apparently,

because I've been quite busy 

and working in quite a few different projects.

I'll talk about some of those projets really soon,

and maybe this picture may give you an idea

of what I'm talking about.

Mas é apenas aparentemente, porque tenho estado ocupada e a trabalhar em alguns projectos.

Brevemente falarei desses projectos, e talvez esta fotografia vos possa dar uma ideia do que estou a dizer.

But today is about cheese.

About making fresh cheese right from my kitchen.

Some years ago I used to make fresh cheese at home

on the cheese maker

(a dual funcionality appliance that I had in Portugal,

which would make yogurt or fresh cheese).

Mas hoje é acerca de queijo.

Acerca de como fazer queijo fresco na minha cozinha.

Há alguns anos atrás eu customava fazer queijo fresco na queijeira

(era um aparelhito com dupla funcionalidade que fazia yogurte ou queijo fresco).

Here I don't have a cheese maker,

but a couple days ago I just felt like craving some fresh cheese.

After researching a little bit on the net... eureka!

I've decided to give a try, tough I didn't had any fresh lemons,

only the little yellow bottle of lemon juice.

Even so, I decided to go for it.

Aqui não tenho queijeira,

mas há alguns dias atrás tive imensa vontade de comer queijo fresco.

Depois de pesquisar um pouco na net... eureka!

Decidi experimentar,

 mesmo não tendo limões frescos,

somente aquela garrafinha amarela de sumo de limão.

Mesmo assim, decidi tentar.

So, this is how I made fresh cheese:

first, I've boiled 8 cups of milk (I've used 2%)

in a big sauce pan.

As soon as it started boiling,

I got it out from the heat and immediately

add 5 tablespoons of lemon juice,

stirring constantly, always in the same direction.

After a few seconds I could feel the curds forming.

Then I let it sit in the covered pan for about two hours.

Two hours became almost three hours,

since I almost forgot about it

while watching a moving and crocheting some tawashi...

Então, foi assim que fiz queijo fresco: primeiro, fervi 8 chávenas de leite (usei leite de 2%) numa panela grande.

Assim que comecou a ferver

retirei a panela do lume e juntei 5 colheres de sopa de sumo de limão,

mexendo constantemente e sempre na mesma direcção.

Após alguns segundos, comecei a sentir o coalho a formar.

Deixei então o coalho a repousar na panela tapada por cerca de duas horas.

As duas horas tornaram-se em quase três horas,

porque quase me esqueci do queijo

enquanto crochetava um tawashi e via um filme ne televisao. 

 

Anyway... I've used a colander

covered with a cheese cloth to carefully drain the curds.

De qualquer modo... usei um escorredor coberto com gaze para cuidadosamente drenar o coalho.

At this point I should tell you that the whey can be saved

and boiled again to get more curds out of it and make ricota cheese.

But I didn't do it; instead I gave it to the cats

(those neighborhood cats that I usually feed).

When the curds were quite dry and all the liquid (whey) had been drained,

Neste momento deveria dizer-vos que o soro pode ser reservado

e fervido de novo para formar novo coalho e fazer queijo ricota

(queijo ricota acho que é um pouco como o requeijão).

Mas eu não fiz isso; em vez disso dei-o aos gatos

(aqueles gatos da vizinhança a que costumo dar de comer).

Quando o coalho estava quase seco e todo o líquido (soro) tinha sido drenado,

I formed a bag with the cheese cloth

and hanged it up for two or three more hours

to completely finish draining.

formei um saco com a gaze e pendurei-o por mais duas ou tres horas

para acabar de drenar o soro completamente.

After that

I've transfered the curds into a bowl

and refrigerate it for a couple more hours...

Depois transferi o coalho para uma tigela e pus no frigorífico por mais umas duas horas...

Transfered it from the bowl into a nice plate...

Transferi da tigela para um prato bonito...

et voila!

Fresh cheese!

A little bit of salt and pepper...delicious!

et voila!

Queijo fresco!

Com um pouco de sal e pimenta... delicioso!

A cat in a bag...?

No, not really...

What I'm sharing with you today

is a little bit of my (pictorial) story with my cat...

Most of all, it's about my tribute to my little fury friend,

who (literally) helped mend my broken heart

and has been my emotional support and best companion since J's death.
Um gato dentro do saco...?
Não, não verdadeiramente...
O que eu gostaria de partilhar hoje convosco
é um pouco da minha história (pictografica) com a minha gata...
Acima de tudo, é um tributo à minha amiga peludinha,
que (literalmente) ajudou a remendar o meu coração
e tem sido o meu suporte emocional e a melhor companheira desde a morte do J.

Don't get me wrong.

My family and my friends have been really supportive

for all those tremendous years of J's illness and passing,

not to mention all the really bad situations
I had to endure here along that path.

Do you know the saying that 's in moments of tragedy you really get to know who's really your friend...?, well, it is absolutely true.

Many years of total physical and emotional solitude,

with not much sympathy or help around,

I had to struggle to keep my sanity.
Não interpretem erradamente.
A minha família e os meus amigos têm-me apoiado muito
durante os anos terríveis da doença do J e da sua morte,
já para não falar de todas as horríveis situações que aqui tive de enfrentar
completamente sózinha durante esse percurso.
Conhecem o ditado que diz que é nos momentos de tragédia
que se ficam a conhecer os verdadeiros amigos...?,
pois é absolutamente verdadeiro.
Foram muitos anos de completa solidão física e emocional,
e sem muito simpatia ou ajuda por perto tive de me esforçar para manter a sanidade.

One of this blog purpose has been helping me

overcoming all those not so good circumstances of my life.

I think Pooh-Pooh has the same purpose

and I'm always amazed with her sense of loyalty,

dedication and friendship.
Um dos objectivos deste blog tem sido ajudar-me
a ultrapassar todas essas menos boas circunstâncias da minha vida.
Acho que a Pooh-Pooh tem o mesmo objectivo,
e fico pasmada com o seu sentido de lealdade, dedicação e amizade.

Yeah, I'm talking about Pooh-Pooh the cat... I don't think she would be more of a friend even if she was a dog.

That's why this blog post is dedicated to her.

To honour my friend pet and to show off the little brat she is,

I made her a scrapbook, which I'm sharing with you all.
Sim, estou a falar da Pooh-Pooh, a gata... não acho que ela poderia ser mais amiga
mesmo que fosse um cão.
É por isso que este post lhe é dedicado.
Para honrar a minha amiga gata e mostar como ela é mimada,
fiz um álbum,
que partilho aqui convosco.

The begining of a new year

I hope everyone had a nice new year begining.

I certainly did.

And on January the 2nd we had the first  snow of this Winter 

(it's already all gone now, but it was nice).

Espero que todos vós tenham tido um bom começo de ano.

Eu certamente que tive.

E no passado dia 2 de Janeiro tivemos a primeira neve deste Inverno

(já derreteu toda, mas foi bonito).

This year New Year was a special one, since I got to spend it on Skype

with a dear friend back in Portugal.

I enjoyed it a lot, 

and since Portugal is five hours ahead of us,

I can say I was in 2012 much earlier then everyone else here in Tennessee.  

I will not get in details

(it feels kinda embarassing),

but while Skyping with my friend I had a little accident on my laptop,

and the keyboard got kinda wacked... so, I had to buy a wireless keyboard (which, by the way, works perfectly),

thus only now I'm able to post again.

That being said,

I also want to show you a terrific Christmas present my son,

daughter-in-law and grandson sent me.

Este ano o Ano Novo foi especial,

uma vez que o passei no Skype com uma querida amiga em Portugal.

Gostei muito, e uma vez que Portugal está cinco horas à nossa frente,

posso dizer que entrei em 2012 muito mais cedo que o resto do pessoal aqui no Tennessee.

Não vou entrar em detalhes

(porque é de certa forma embaraçoso),

mas enquanto estava no Skype com a minha amiga

tive um pequeno acidente com o laptop,

e o teclado ficou meio estragado...por isso tive de comprar um teclado sem fios

(que, já agora, trabalha perfeitamente),

e é por issso que só agora consigo voltar a publicar um post.

Tendo dito isto, quero mostrar-vos o bonito presente de Natal

que o meu filho, nora e neto me mandaram.

It's really precious and I love it!

Oh! Do you rebember the Hobbes I made for my dear boy...?,

it finally arrived in Portugal and he loved it!

É muito precioso e gostei imenso!

finalmente chegou a Portugal e ele adorou!

The rainbow of friendship

Yesterday I had a wonderful surprise,

the mail man brought me an unexpected gift from a dear friend.

Ontem tive uma óptima surpresa,

o carteiro trouxe-me um presente inesperado duma querida amiga.

It felt really good not because of the gift

but because of what the gift meant.

Soube mesmo bem não por causa do presente, mas pelo seu significado.

I know is difficult for foreign cultures to understand what saudades really mean..., but putting it this way may help:

Eu sei que é difícil culturas estrangeiras entenderem o significado de saudades...,

mas talvez ajude posto desta maneira:

she sent me the basics for a traditional Portuguese Christmas meal,

ela mandou-me o essencial para uma refeição tradicional de Natal,

little tokens from my beloved ocean,

pequenas lembranças do meu querido oceano,

shared sweet memories from some of my friend's personal life moments,

memórias preciosas como partilha de alguns momentos da vida pessoal da minha amiga,

and (handmade by her) a Christmas card and a bookmark!

e um cartão de Boas Festas e um marcador de livros (feitos por ela)!

I wish she would decide already

to start a blog to show and tell her amazing creativity!

Espero que ela se decida finalmente a começar um blog

e a partilhar toda a sua fantástica creatividade!

She creates mostly by upcycling stuff

and her project about literacy is simply... amazing

(as is her passion about children literature)!

Ela cria coisas principalmente pelo processo de upcycling

(é-me difícil traduzir para português este conceito de upcyling... basicamente significa reciclar

mas transformando o objecto em algo diferente sem o destruir,

enquanto que reciclar significa basicamente destruir uma coisa para a transformar noutra),

e o seu projecto de literacia é simplesmente fantástico

(assim como a sua paixão por literatura infantil)!

So... because today's the last day of the year,

I dedicate the last 2011 post of this blog to my friend,

knowing that good friends are more precious than anything else in this life.

Então... porque hoje é o último dia do ano,

dedico o último post deste blog à minha amiga,

reconhecendo que bons amigos são a coisa mais preciosa desta vida.
